GRTU's Director General Vincent Farrugia and also EESC member and rapporteur on the EESC Opinion on the Effective Enforcement of Budgetary Surveillance in the Euro Area met this week Ms Sylvie Goulard, MEP, at the European Parliament as rapporteur on the same Commission Communication but at the European Parliament.
During the meeting Mr Farrugia and Ms Goulard discussed both their reports and tried to find common ground, this would be desirable due to the high importance of the subject .
The Proposal forms part of a package of 6 legislative proposals aimed at strengthening economic governance in the EU – and more specifically in the euro area – as part of the EU's response to the challenges highlighted by recent turmoil on sovereign debt markets. The European Council of 24-25 March 2011 noted that the 6 pack of legislative proposals on economic governance is key to ensuring enhanced fiscal discipline and avoiding excessive macroeconomic imbalances. The 6-pack forms part of a wider comprehensive package of measures adopted by the European Council which should allow us to turn the corner of the financial crisis and continue our path towards sustainable growth. This package will strengthen the economic governance of the European Union and ensure the lasting stability of the euro area as a whole. Within the new framework of the European semester, the European Council endorsed the priorities for fiscal consolidation and structural reform giving a clear orientation for the preparation of the next year's national budgets and reform plans.
The role of EESC is fundamental to ensuring that the Parliament takes the right decision as will effect all the countries in the Eurozone.
